Penguin Boomroom Brand Website
McVities wanted to enhance the brand awareness of
their leading Penguin Biscuit brand. The Penguin character
is seen as being a bit cheeky & qwerky. With this
in mind the concept of an interactive website named
‘The Penguin Boomroom’ was devised. The
Boom Room was aimed at 9-13 year olds and was supported
with a UK wide on pack promotion, as 12 million multi-packs
were printed with graphics, noise codes and the website
URL.
The Boom Room was created around the Penguin character,
the users were able to mix strange noises with music
and choose dance moves for the Penguin. The noises
chosen for the site reflected the cheeky nature of
the character, hence, belch, barf, fart sounds etc
were created at our studio. The music and dance sequences
had to match perfectly, to do this we wrote four original
music tracks, while the animated penguin was drawn
traditionally by hand frame by frame, then traced
and coloured on the computer. When combined on the
site they worked perfectly.
The users could save their mixes and send them to
one another via email from within the site. They could
also download screen savers and various wallpapers.
With all this functionality and over 4mins of audio,
the main obstacle was keeping file size to a minimum,
this was a mammoth task on it's own. This was achieved
by being able to use high levels of audio compression,
as we had written our own music.
The site was a enormous hit, Cartoon Networks informed
us, that The Boomroom had accounted for a third of
all traffic visiting their website while the promotion
lasted, a resounding success!!
With the amazing success of Vol I, McVities commissioned
an updated Vol II earlier than planned. The new site
had a new look and feel, additional dance moves, two
new music tracks, 18 new noises, a new game, a competition
and more downloads, it too was a roaring success!!
Unfortunately the Penguin Boomroom promotion is no
longer active but you can still view Vol II using
the following link, (The Shockwave plug-in is required)
