What a Difference a Day Makes
Outrageous Productions approached us to help in the creation of a new employee orientation event named “What a Difference a Day Makes” for Marconi, to be held at Disneyland Paris for 800 new employees. The objective was to bring together the new employees from differing parts of the globe to encourage international teamwork and increase networking, while also exemplifying “The Marconi Way” (Marconi’s internal corporate philosophy).

the solution:

Outrageous put forward the idea of splitting the employees into 32 teams, each made up of members from around the globe. They were set the task of developing a website that formed the basis or their understanding of the Marconi Way. The teams were each given password protected areas on a webserver on the Marconi intranet, where they developed their sites in private. Outrageous sourced stock photography and graphics that the teams could use for their sites, while we encoded Marconi corporate videos, and combined everything together into CDROMs that each team received in there orientation pack. The completed sites where on display at the live orientation event where they were marked by a panel of judges.

We developed an interactive quiz system for the live event, with the questions being written specifically for the game, as it was themed around the four different lands of Disneyland. Each team was split, so three to four members stayed at the base while the rest went to the land displayed on the computer screen, due to the large number of contestants it was necessary to rotate the teams into the different lands, which was controlled automatically by the game. The game posed multiple choice questions about different parts of Disneyland that the team had to answer correctly to gain points. The base team had to communicate to the field team the question, and sometimes describe photographs, throughout the game using 64 mobile phones! The game lasted for 3 hours.

the result

The event was a huge success, Marconi were extremely happy with the result, plus all the contestants had a fantastic time. The event also won a Silver IVCA award.

“The Event was an outstanding success and will be hard to surpass next year. The feedback from the participants has been glowing.” Hans Brown, Orientation Project Manager, Marconi
